Welcome to your January News

Chairmans Note

Happy New Year!
Many of us will have had an opportunity to take a break over Christmas and can look ahead into 2017, refreshed and re-energised.  This is no different for our User Group.  Although many of the events lined up for 2017 are already scheduled and planned, it’s vital that we stay flexible to adapt to meet the services and knowledge you require.  Our User Group must also align with SAP locally and globally so that we can provide knowledge to you our members, enabling you to understand SAP’s strategic direction and vision of the future.

With this in mind, the UKISUG Vice Chair Paul Copper, CEO Craig Dale and I met recently with Cormac Watters, SAP MD UK&I and Franck Cohen, SAP President, EMEA.  From that meeting 3 key topics arose:

1.     S/4 HANA Migration.  Not a surprise!

In support of this, SAP has launched a dedicated website to help customers identify their individual SAP S/4HANA business value; (which includes a survey, value calculator, etc.). The latest roadmap of SAP S/4HANA (three-year outlook) is available at

2.     Cloud integration.  Again no surprise since SAP has been driving the cloud first strategy for some time!

Many of us strive to manage two separate, coherent modes of IT delivery - one focused on stability and the other on agility.  With customer benefits such as fast implementation times, reduced IT efforts, flexibility and scalability to support changing business needs and further growth, one focus when it comes to balancing these two modes is the cloud and the advantages of integrating cloud products into our IT landscape.

3.     Machine Learning.  Topical and fresh!

SAP’s vision on Machine Learning is to make all enterprise applications intelligent. Machine Learning capabilities will step-by-step be integrated into all applicable SAP products. The first two products will focus on Cash Application (Finance) and Resume Matching (HR).  Brand Intelligence (Marketing) and Ticket Intelligence (Services) will follow. Next, SAP will introduce its Machine Learning Platform on HCP that offers a diverse set of Business and Technical Machine Learning services ready for integration into custom solutions.

As we progress through 2017 we will seek to cover more on these topics at SIG’s, Symposia, Webinars and at UKISUG Connect, and we hope that will include many live examples and success stories.

Finally, may I wish you all a successful 2017 and I hope to meet some of you at our events during the year ahead.

Snow Software have put together a handy free guide on how to save money on SAP licensing. Organizations across the world spend millions on their SAP systems, typically increasing their license expenditure every year.

The processes and solutions to control and limit this upward curve represent huge cost saving opportunities (By 2019, annual spending on enterprise software licenses will decrease by 30% as a result of software license optimization, according to Gartner.*) They also enable the SAP team to spend less time on license administration and turn their focus to mission-critical tasks.

SAP licensing is complex and, although the data required to understand the estate and optimize is available natively, the task to consolidate is laborious, time-consuming and error-prone.

Many cost-saving benefits can be accomplished by gathering a holistic view of the SAP environment, optimizing licenses, removing duplicates and building up a complete picture of usage.

This empowers the organization to be ready when purchasing new SAP technologies, upon contract renegotiation and when SAP comes to audit.

The guide provides five key initiatives to drive significant savings on SAP through effective Software Asset Management.

Understand how to identify and optimize the correct licenses for your users to maximise savings on your SAP investment:

  • Assign the appropriate named user license to user accounts
  • Identify inactive users for license re-harvesting
  • Avoid duplication of accounts and double- payment for individual users
  • Understand which apps are indirectly accessing SAP systems and minimise risk
  • Measure metrics and only pay for what is being used
