SAP’s Autonomous Enterprise: How Ready Are You?
In recent months, SAP has set out its vision for the Autonomous Enterprise, its new AI-native operating model, built around the SAP Business AI Platform, SAP Autonomous Suite and Joule Assistants. There is clear potential in the Autonomous Enterprise, particularly at a time when organisations are increasingly trying to understand where AI will deliver genuine business value. So, it was encouraging to hear SAP talk more openly about interoperability, governance, customer outcomes and how AI is being thoughtfully embedded into business processes.
However, realising that potential will depend on how effectively SAP can translate its vision into practical, measurable value for customers. For organisations focused on simplifying their SAP landscapes, improving data quality and controlling the costs, being able to separate the hype from the reality is paramount.
How will agentic AI change your organisation?
At the core of SAP’s vision for the Autonomous Enterprise is the promise AI agents offer. Agents provide useful tools for helping people execute their role more quickly. Alongside productivity gains, agents offer an opportunity for humans to automate repetitive tasks, ensuring these are completed in the simplest way possible, while freeing up people to focus on nonstandard work and innovation.
However, to see the benefits of AI agents, organisations must decide on one of two approaches: do they adopt agents to work on existing processes, or do they redesign their processes for agents? Until this question is answered, the relationship between humans and agents will remain unclear.
The other change organisations must make to realise the value of agents is how they use their data. Seeing historic data as a system of record is no longer good enough; instead, data must be seen as a system of insight. When organisations are able to mine their data and use it for AI, they will uncover a wide range of meaningful use cases that AI can solve.
What comes next for UKISUG members?
A recent SUGTalks conversation between Conor Riordan (UKISUG chair) and Ian Mallinson (UKISUG board director), focused on how organisations can prepare for the Autonomous Enterprise.
The key message was to make a start with Joule experimentation. While it is unlikely that AI agents will provide transformational change in the short term, applying them to targeted use cases will provide positive first steps. Crucially, this approach to Joule will also help technical teams to provide measurable results to engage business leaders. This can be a vital step in securing organisation-wide buy-in on agentic AI, which is vital to driving innovation, especially as SAP launches Joule Studio 2.0.
